The harmattan is a cold and dusty season which is experienced between the end of November and the middle of March in West Africa. During this period one’s skin is very dry accompanied by dried and peeling lips if proper care is not taken.
Lip balms and gloss used to be a necessity among woman, however men are now seen applying these products to help keep lips moisturized.
Lip balms moisturize the lips to keep it healthy, seal the lips from dryness and must be applied on regular basis at any time during the harmattan season. There are many different kinds of lip balm products available, from those with only natural ingredients, to lip balms with honey, to medicated balms, to flavored balms including strawberry, apple, orange, banana, among others. The use of a lip balm is an effective factor in the overall lip health and should be taken seriously as a way to prevent unnecessary sores or infections. Here are some ways to prevent and cure dry lips during the harmattan;
  • Dehydration – This is one of the leading causes of dry lips. Drinking plenty of water is just as important for your body as eating is. This will stop dryness and cracking and make your lips appear fuller and healthier.
  • Use lip balms – Lip balms are essential products especially during the harmattan season. Avoid lip balms with chemicals as they can actually irritate the lips more. Look for balms that are natural with ingredients such as Shea, almond, coconut, cocoa butter and olive oil.
  • Avoid licking your lips- Contrary to what we think, licking your lips only offer you a temporary sense of relief, but in actual sense the saliva will dry out your lips.
  • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables- The lips often get dry because the pH levels in the body are off balance. Eating fruits and vegetables will help restore this and remove the toxins in your body that are making your lips chap. Smoothies are always a delicious option to achieve this if you don’t like eating veggies.
  • Avoid salty and spicy foods – Foods containing salts and spices can irritate your lips and cause inflammation.
